Patient Type

Students in this rotation conduct couple therapy with veterans and their romantic partners. They serve a clinic population diverse in terms of age, gender, racial and ethnic identification, and disability status. Many patients in our clinic are coping with co-occurring physical and mental health problems.

Experience Type

Students in this practicum will be supervised in evidence-based couple therapy assessment and interventions during 1-hour, weekly individual supervision. A 1-hour weekly didactic seminar/group supervision is held each Tuesday from 8:30-9:30 at the Rio Clinic in Mission Valley (8989 Rio San Diego Dr., Suite 360) or virtually, depending on reopening status.
The primary models represented in the clinic include: Integrative-Behavioral Couple Therapy and Emotionally-Focused Couple Therapy. Typical presenting complaints include: low emotional closeness; communication difficulties; poor conflict resolution; recovery from infidelity; trust/intimacy issues; coping with chronic health problems/caretaking issues; post-deployment transition; pre-marital counseling; & parenting issues.
Finally, a unique aspect of this practicum experience is the availability of co-therapy model (depending on co-therapists availability and pending in-person status), as a training and clinical tool. Additionally, the trainee will likely be able to utilize telemental health for couples care. These experiences, as well as working in a medical center environment, greatly enhance a student’s ability to function as part of a treatment team to provide the highest quality of patient care.
Additional optional training opportunities include monthly conference calls as part of either (a) VHA’s (nationwide) Family Mental Health Postdoctoral training programs (1st Monday of each month 12:00-1:00 pm), (b) VHA’s (nationwide) Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy consultation program (2nd Monday of each month, 9:00-10:00 am), and (c) VHA’s (nationwide) Advanced Family Consultation Call (4th Monday of each month, 9:00-10:00 am). While audio access to these calls may be available from any location, viewing the slide sets associated with these calls requires access to a VA computer.
The FMHP team includes 4 staff psychologists, 2 postdoctoral fellows, and a half-time intern. Opportunities for vertical supervision/group supervision may be possible, as well as the possibility to co-lead a couple’s-based workshop.

Limiting Factors During the 2021-2022 training year we anticipate our preference being able to accommodate a practicum student at the Rio Clinic in Mission Valley on Tuesdays. Should on-site opportunities not exist due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there may be a possibility for remote/telework. It is not anticipated that telework would be permanent for the year. Please contact Dr. Wrape directly if interested in this practicum and in need of an alternate schedule to determine availability.
