Research Interests

I have a strong interest in health disparities, migrant health, sociocultural factors in chronic disease management and prevention, and culturally appropriate behavioral interventions for reducing cardiometabolic risk among Latinos.

As part of Dr. Linda Gallo’s lab, I have been involved in the development and testing of a behavioral intervention, Mi Puente, intended to reduce hospital readmissions among at-risk Latinos with cardiometabolic conditions. As an affiliate investigator, I have also had to opportunity to work with the incredibly rich dataset from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL). This large multi-site epidemiological study examines the incidence, prevalence, and risk and protective factors for cardiovascular and other chronic diseases among U.S. Hispanics/Latinos. My thesis will use data collected from the youth subsample, focusing on social factors that exist outside of the context of the family (e.g., peer support for physical activity and food choices) and their relationship with obesity risk.
