Former SDSU/UCSD JDP Student Named as Director of Health Services and Outcomes Research

Kathy Goggin

Kathy Goggin, PhD, has been named Director of Health Services and Outcomes Research, a new position at Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics. Her appointment was effective Sept. 3, 2013. Dr. Goggin will hold the Ernest L. Glasscock, MD, Chair in Pediatric Education and Research at Children’s Mercy. In her new position, she will:

  • Drive the development of the strategic vision for enhancing health services and outcomes research;
  • Recruit and lead a multidisciplinary team of scientists that collaborates with faculty across CMH, partner institutions and the community;
  • Stimulate innovative approaches to the measurement of health system performance to improve outcomes; and
  • Establish a national reputation for CMH in health services and outcomes research.

Dr. Goggin completed her PhD at the San Diego State University / University of California, San Diego Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology in 1994 where she specialized in Behavioral Medicine. Dr. Goggin’s graduate advisors were Drs. Vanessa Malcarne and James Sallis.

She served as Chief Fellow of the NIMH Postdoctoral Training Program in HIV/AIDS at the Cornell University Medical College/Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centers in New York City until being awarded the prestigious Aaron Diamond Postdoctoral Research Fellowship to continue her research at Columbia University.

Dr. Goggin is a Fellow and former Executive Board member of the Society of Behavioral Medicine and regularly serves as a reviewer for the National Institutes of Health. She has been awarded the UMKC Dean’s Good Teaching Award, UMKC Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Community Engagement, the UMKC Trustees’ Award, as well as, the N.T. Veatch Award for Distinguished Research.
